Thailand in December: Weather, Islands, Crowds & Two Ready-to-Book Itineraries

December in Thailand is the country’s highest-certainty weather month—and also the most expensive and hardest to book.

The south-west monsoon has largely cleared. The Andaman Sea is often at its calmest. Cool-season Thailand has properly arrived in the north, where you will want a light layer in Chiang Mai before breakfast. There is almost nowhere you should not go this month. The trade-off: you pay a peak-season Thailand premium, and you lock rooms and boat seats months ahead.

Start trip planning from East Marvel Thailand. For season logic beyond one month, see When to Go to Thailand. For the planning frame, use How to Plan a Trip to Thailand in 2027: 7 Easy Steps. Before you board: Before You Fly — Passport, TDAC & Papers and file the free card at tdac.immigration.go.th.

Temperatures and rainfall below are long-term averages for planning, not a forecast for any single year. Check the short-range outlook on the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) and provincial pages at tmd.go.th/en/weather/provinces before you travel.

1. The Month in One Line

Thailand in December = highest weather certainty: the Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi, Khao Lak) is fully in its prime; the north is in a strong trekking and temple window; Bangkok in December is among its most walkable months. The only coast still winding down is the Gulf of Thailand—Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao—which can still see rain early in the month and often settles toward late December and New Year week.

If you remember only one thing: the Christmas to New Year Thailand block (roughly 23 December–2 January) is the single most expensive stretch of the year. The first three weeks of December are usually cheaper and less crowded, with essentially the same cool-season weather. That is your sweet spot if you want peak conditions without peak pricing.

2. Weather and Sea State (Averages, Not a Forecast)

Three details worth internalising:

  • “Cool season” does not mean “not hot.” Midday UV is still very high. You can burn in a couple of hours. “Cool” means mornings, evenings, and the northern highlands.
  • Chiang Mai’s temperature swing is real. T-shirt by day, jacket after dark, fleece if you chase sunrise on Doi Inthanon or Pai. Mountain mist is common—do not treat self-drive hill roads as casual.
  • Do not bet on dry Samui in the first ten days. Historical patterns show more unsettled weather early in the month, with a clearer second half. If you must use the Gulf in early December, put non-refundable liveaboards and milestone dinners later in the month. Live checks: TMD English home · TMD provincial weather.

3. This Month’s Calendar

Official park reference: Mu Ko Similan National Park — DNP portal. Seasonal closure context: Thailand PRD notice. Buy park access through the official e-ticket process or your licensed operator—not a random “queue jump” site.

December has no nationwide alcohol-sale blackout tied to the major Buddhist holy days. Bars and beach clubs generally operate as normal—one reason this is the party peak. Reconfirm local rules for your dates if nightlife matters.

4. Where to Base Yourself in December

First choice: Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi, Khao Lak, Similan day trips)

Best shape of the year for Thailand beach holidays: calmer water, stronger boat reliability, postcard sunrises. Best for first-timers, families, and anyone who wants island-hopping with fewer cancellations.

Second choice: Bangkok plus the interior (Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, Hua Hin)

Bangkok weather in December suits riverside walks, rooftops and night markets. Pairing the capital with Hua Hin is an underrated, lower-drama option if you want sea air without a long island logistics chain.

Choose with caution: Koh Samui / Phangan / Tao

Fine if you accept a day or two of swell reshuffling boats. Strengths: direct flights, self-contained resorts, a busy Christmas–New Year events calendar. If your goal is resort-and-pool time rather than daily island-hopping, December on Samui can work well.

If you want to dodge the heaviest crowds: centre on Chiang Mai–Chiang Rai–Pai, or stay on the Krabi mainland (Ao Nang, Railay access) rather than the busiest outer-island strips.

5. Crowds and Pricing: Three Tiers

Two line items that change the bill:

  • Mandatory New Year’s Eve gala dinners. Many island and luxury resorts require a gala seat on 31 December—often roughly USD 80–300+ per person, frequently excluded from the room rate. Read the terms before you pay.
  • Single-night surcharges. 31 December rates can run far above the month’s norm and be non-refundable. Sometimes a mid-range city night plus one great dinner beats a forced resort package. Ask East Marvel to put inclusions in writing when you request a quote from thailandtour.eastmarvel.com.

6. Two Itineraries You Can Copy As-Is

A · 7 days: Andaman classic (safe first-time answer)

  1. D1 Arrive Bangkok; riverside hotel; light evening only.
  2. D2 Grand Palace / Wat Pho + riverside dusk (cover shoulders and knees).
  3. D3 Fly Phuket; transfer to Khao Lak or Ao Nang.
  4. D4 Similan Islands day trip (early out, early back)—confirm park season and tickets via DNP Similan / your operator.
  5. D5 Phang Nga Bay kayaking or Railay time.
  6. D6 Phi Phi speedboat or a pure beach day (keep one flexible).
  7. D7 Depart.

Place sea days in the middle so you can reshuffle for weather. File TDAC before you fly: tdac.immigration.go.th.

B · 10 days: two climates, city–north–Andaman

  1. D1–D3 Chiang Mai (old-city temples, Doi Suthep, cooking class, ethical elephant project—no riding).
  2. D4 Chiang Rai day (White / Blue temples) or fly toward the Andaman.
  3. D5–D7 Khao Lak or Phuket (Similan window + beach + Old Town as energy allows).
  4. D8 Fly toward Bangkok (or keep one more beach night if flights force it).
  5. D9–D10 Bangkok (markets, river, spa; avoid packing the Grand Palace into arrival afternoon).

Climate layering—jacket in northern mornings, swimsuit by the afternoon south. Domestic airfares spike in December; lock connections in one booking pass. For a fuller 14-day frame, see Thailand 2-Week Itinerary for First-Timers.

7. Three Mistakes People Make in December

  1. Not reading gala-dinner and minimum-stay clauses. Before paying, confirm: Is 31 December dinner mandatory? How much? Do children pay half? Is there a no-dinner rate?
  2. Putting New Year’s Eve on an island with a one-night booking. Full ferries, pier queues, and no cars after midnight stack on the same night. Stay several nights—or keep the countdown in Bangkok proper.
  3. Assuming “park open” means “guaranteed seat.” The Similans sit in open season in December, but daily visitor management, sea state, and sold-out boats still apply. Park rules on site are not negotiable—check DNP Similan and your operator’s sailing notice.

Safety notes: respect red flags and rip-current warnings; no photography in immigration or customs areas, including a quick shot of your own entry stamp. See also Before You Fly to Thailand.

8. Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need warm clothes for Thailand in December?

Not for most islands or Bangkok days. Yes for Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Pai, or any hill sunrise—early mornings can drop toward the low teens or colder in the mountains.

Is the Similan guaranteed in December?

December sits in the usual open season, so in principle yes. In practice it depends on the current DNP notice, the operator’s advisory, and that day’s sea state. Treat “open” as “in season,” not “boats run every day.” Official reference: Mu Ko Similan National Park.

Is Christmas a big deal in Thailand?

Not a Thai public holiday, but malls, hotels and beach clubs decorate heavily and run festive menus. Temples and government offices are largely unaffected.

How far ahead should I book Thailand in December?

Often two to three months for ordinary dates; four to six months for the Christmas–New Year block—and earlier for popular resorts and Similan seats.

Is Koh Samui worth it in December?

Yes if you accept possible early-month rain and occasional swell. Advantages: direct flights, mature resorts, busy NYE calendar. If your goal is “calm water every day for island-hopping,” pick the Andaman.

Where do I check the live weather?

Thai Meteorological Department and provincial forecasts.

What about entry paperwork?

Visa exemption is not paperwork-free. File the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card at tdac.immigration.go.th. Full checklist: Before You Fly to Thailand.

9. Let Us Handle the Details That Cost Money

Once the weather logic is clear, the money leaks are in minimum stays, gala dinners, and badly timed boat days.

East Marvel builds private Thailand itineraries around your exact dates: which coast is in its good season, how to avoid mandatory-gala traps, where to place sea days so they can reshuffle, and a reminder before you fly on documents—including when to file the TDAC.
